Here’s another sneak peek of my debut picture book, SWIM, JIM!… out this May!

My sketches are pretty loose right up until I go to finished artwork. I want to keep as much of life and humor in the work as possible, so I try not to overwork it.

I choose a color palette and plan the color story before I apply any digital paint. The color tells the reader the location (swamp) and time of day (night), as well as what the emotion is for each scene (nervous excitement).

Reproducing the deep greens in print came with some challenges. I had to bump up the blues and remove some of the yellow to make sure the green was vivid, not a dreaded pea soup green. In the end, I couldn’t be happier with the print quality.
