Do you live in a book desert? Look it up here: https://www.unitebooks.com/book-deserts/the-book-desert-map.

If so, here are some things you can do to grow literacy in your community:

1. Start a Little Free Library. Mine is the only one in several surrounding neighborhoods.

Here’s how to start your own: https://littlefreelibrary.org/start/

2. Sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Each month, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails a high quality, age appropriate book to all registered children, addressed to them, at no cost to the child’s family. Here’s their website: https://imaginationlibrary.com/usa/

3. Use your local library. By simply walking in the door and getting a library card, you demonstrate the value of libraries and keep this invaluable service alive in your area. Even better, check out a book or a telescope or lino print kit. You’ll be amazed by all the things your library offers. Including ghost hunting kits! Here’s a Washington Post about one I checked out recently.

4. More ideas? Please share them with us!
